New Information Leaflet on Interlaboratory Comparisons

The joint EEE-PT Working Group has published a new Information Leaflet on "Interlaboratory Comparisons other than Proficiency testing".

ISO/IEC 17025 requires a laboratory to participate in proficiency testing (PT) and/or to participate in interlaboratory comparisons (ILCs) other than PT. However, the Standard gives no guidance as to what these other ILCs might be, or indeed how they might compare in relation to PT. This leaflet outlines the three main purposes of interlaboratory comparisons and explains how the different objectives affect the design of the comparison.

The different objectives include procedure evaluation (also known as collaborative study) for testing new standard methods; Reference material characterisation, for assignment of values to reference materials, and laboratory performance evaluation, or PT. The leaflet explains the key differences and points out some of the limitations for use in demonstrating laboratory competence, as compared to PT.
